Landscape Oil Painting Presentation by John O'Keefe

I was approached by the Cheshire Art League late in 2009 and asked if I would give a presentation on my painting process and techniques. I accepted the invitation and began working on a presentation right away. The final power point presentation contained over 140 detailed and automated slides that documented the major elements of my painting process from conception to making the final sale.

Below are some sample slides from my presentation:

After the presentation I received many compliments. Below are some comments from C.A.L. members as recorded in the program guest book.

"Excellent essay on composition. People know so little about it."
- Joan -

"...Marvelous and clear presentation..."
- Angela Orsene -

"Beautifully narrated and wonderful paintings."
- Lucy -

"Excellent presentation and beautiful pictures. Very organized thought process which is helpful to the viewer."

My home studio and gallery

My studio is my home and my home is my studio. I would not have it any other way because I feel in my element here .... I have two areas where I perform most of my work, a primary workspace for painting and a thinking space which is my personal mini gallery where I hang my in-progress and completed artworks .... The best thing about my studio is that the commute to and from work is only about 30 feet.

My working space is small, but that is just how I like it because I am surrounded by my materials and art supplies. I like to paint under artificial light because I find it to be a consistent enviornment in which to work, regardless of the time of day. I have another space where I assemble and package the Giclee reproductions.

The thinking space is my favorite part of the studio. I love painting landscapes in the style of the Hudson River School and Victorian era artists, and this room is authentically decorated in the style of that time period. My artworks are hanging on just about every available inch of wallspace. Some are completed, some are in-progress, and some have not yet been started (you can see the white canvases mounted in frames).

This is also the room where I keep my reference library of books and my laptop. I can sit in this room for hours, researching through my books or on the Internet. This is a really great room for hanging out and I often get inspired for new works while I'm sitting here.

My First Salmagundi Club Auction

Pictures and 2 video documentaries about my first auction. The videos are about my efforts to sell my painting entitled 'The Road Home'. I created them to give a better sense of the work and effort that goes into selling a painting.

www.johnokeefe.net

I have created a new site that is designed to showcase my paintings and artwork without all the extra content that is on my ordering website. I intend to keep this new site simple and focused on the art. The new site layout displays all paintings on one page using clickable high resolution thumbnail images.

Screenshot sample of www.johnokeefe.net

By clicking on the painting thumbnail images you will be taken directly to that paintings order page on my main site. Once on the main site you will see a larger, higher resolution, image of the painting with ordering information. From the main site you can access other links and details about the painting.

Feedback and comments on the new site are appreciated.

Fine Art Reproduction Presentation by Rob Lyon of Sound Color

Sponsor: Cheshire Art League
Location: The Picture Framer, Cheshire, CT.
Date: October 15, 2008

Rob Lyon, owner of Sound Color, presented to the Cheshire Art League his 23 years of experience and knowledge in print making and fine art reproduction. Having worked closely with Rob on my own reproductions I was honored that he used several of my paintings as reference material during his discussion with the group.

---------------------

Bob Lyon, Digital Imaging Specialist

On Tuesday, October 14, the Cheshire Art League featured a presentation on limited edition giclee prints by Bob Lyon of Sound Color in Branford, CT. Bob presented the fine points of making fine art giclee prints. Discussion covered getting your artwork digitized to the various output and paper options. Ideas to make your edition stand out and how to realize a return on investment in your prints were some of the topics covered. Bob also covered the option of doing the prints yourself and what equipment is required.

Sound Color's studio is in Branford, CT and on the web at www.soundcolor.biz. Sound Color provides color management consultation, high-end photo retouching, and prepress and fine art prints. Bob has worked with numerous shoreline artists and with photographers from all around the world. There was an open invitation for all to hear him share his 23 years of digital imaging experience.

Here are some pictures taken during the presentation...

Update.....

I have been very busy promoting the art business over the summer. I was accepted into a few association exhibits and had my first solo exhibit in September. I also received some good press for the solo exhibit in a local paper. Below are some links to my event journal pages on my main site.
